Alum Waters Sewer Flooding Alleviation Scheme
Due to a historic sewer flooding problem which was contaminating farm land, work was required to protect from sewer discharge which was previously blighted by hydraulic incapacity. The scheme comprised the construction of a 3,200m3 storage tank which incorporates a low flow channel with a jet flow regulator fitted to limit pass forward flow rate. A weir wall is located between lanes two and three of the storage tank to create ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ sides to the tank.

Murton Flooding Scheme
Split across two phases, works were undertaken to upsize the existing sewerage network. Utilising innovative SuDS solutions, works comprised the installation of a pre-cast concrete storage tank and pipe installation.

The Broadway
A solution was designed to alleviate the extensive flooding issue in the local area. This provided additional capacity within the local drainage network and involved the construction of a new precast concrete storage tank and associated drainage.

Killingworth & Longbenton Water Management Phase 3
The scheme provided additional storage capacity within the lake of 3,000m3 in the form of a flood storage basin. A new overflow weir was constructed on the lake edge, so when the water in the lake rises above a specified level, water spills over into the new detention basin. The development also comprised ancillary works including new public footpaths, an access route, fishing platforms, relocation of existing furniture, floating islands, bat and bird boxes and new wildflower bedding.

Fellgate Flood Alleviation Scheme
Following over 175 properties suffering devastating flood damage, Esh-Stantec, South Tyneside Council and Northumbrian Water worked in partnership to increase flood protection to over 250 properties. The scheme considered all flood risk issues on the Fellgate Estate and utilised sustainable drainage techniques in an innovative approach to flood risk management. Phase one consisted of sewer upgrades in the estate and the installation of two large detention basins. The second phase included swales, bunds, attenuation basins and ponds.

Page Bank
Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, completed emergency repairs at Page Bank. The 30-inch South Derwent Trunk Main that crosses the River Wear had become exposed due to river bank erosion. Emergency repairs involved reshaping the river to redirect the flow, as well as the construction of a rock armour wall to form a new river embankment to protect against further erosion.

Killingworth & Longbenton Water Management Phase 1 & 2
The scheme was required to manage surface water in the Killingworth and Longbenton areas of North Tyneside. It was identified that 3,594 properties were considered at risk of flooding, with over 500 properties known to be affected. Works comprised of SuDS measures being delivered at multiple sites, this involved the diversion of a designated main river and the provision of storage. Delivered by Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water.

Marden Quarry
The scheme comprised the separation of Marden Quarry and other sources of surface water from the public sewer network. Works undertaken included the installation of a 5m wide and 9m deep shaft and associated underground drainage. This created a new surface water drain to separate out the existing flows from Marden Quarry pond from the combined sewer, therefore increasing the capacity and mitigating the flows from other systems.

Whitburn Spill Reduction
Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, was appointed as Framework Contractor on Whitburn Spills. The £7.5m project was to improve the performance and resilience of the sewer network in the North Sunderland and South Tyneside areas.
