Work on the next major investment on North Lincolnshire’s road network will begin in the coming weeks following Esh Construction being appointed to deliver a new southern junction on the M181.
Procured via YORhub’s YORcivil3 framework, the £5.14 million scheme will provide a new access route between the M181 and Burringham Road, Lincolnshire Lakes and the west of Scunthorpe.
Esh Construction will deliver the project on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council with National Highways funding from the Government.
The scheme will involve highway works to construct a new roundabout located to the west of Scunthorpe on the M181 motorway including realignment of Burringham Road, drainage ponds, outfalls, landscaping and associated re-profiling works. Additional improvements will also be undertaken on the adjacent local road network.
Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “This contract award builds on the success of our work delivering the northern junction, which we completed in 2021.
“Throughout the scheme we will deliver a bespoke package of social value initiatives which are designed to maximise the social and economic benefits for the local community. This will include opportunities for the local supply chain, delivering employability and engagement sessions within schools and colleges, funding towards charitable causes, as well as offering work experience and training opportunities for those keen to gain an insight into the industry.”
The appointment means a bypass for Burringham now moves a step closer in reducing congestion at Berkeley Circle, cutting commuting times to and from Scunthorpe and unlocking land for new homes.
Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Rob Waltham, said: “We must thank our local MPs Andrew Percy and Holly Mumby-Croft for supporting us to receive this money from the Government through the levelling up agenda.
“Over the last few months, we have met with ministers and officials to enable the council to start this exciting new development and is the second major investment in the motorway in recent years.
“This is a vital piece of infrastructure that will improve connectivity for residents. Its impact will be felt by drivers using Berkeley Circle, commuters coming from Bottesford, Ashby and Messingham and the people living in Burringham.”
Esh Construction was appointed to YORhub’s YORcivil3 framework in July 2023, which is designed for local authorities and public sector organisations to procure civil engineering contracts worth up to £10 million.
The scheme is expected to complete in Spring 2025.
