A £1.4 million public realm project which has re-vamped Church Square in Scunthorpe Town Centre has been delivered by Esh Construction.
Working on behalf of North Lincolnshire Council, the scheme formed the second phase of the Scunthorpe Urban Park development which was supported by the Government’s Towns Fund initiative.
The new park and gardens have been created to drive footfall to the town and feature ultra-modern stonework, weathered steel and a dramatic green makeover. 1,400m2 of Scoutmoor Yorkstone paving, new lighting and plush lawns have replaced the former paved area alongside an array of new trees, plants and shrubs, all of which will surround a brand-new statement water feature – providing the perfect place to relax while visiting the town.
Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “This is the second scheme we have delivered for North Lincolnshire Council, with the construction of the M181 Northern Junction completing last year. We are pleased to continue our successful working relationship with the council and are proud to play our part in this key regeneration development for the area of Scunthorpe, creating a lasting legacy for the town.”
Councillor Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This fantastic space will be enjoyed by the students at the UTC, the visitors to the amazing discovery centre and the many people who live and work nearby. It is only just the beginning, however.
“The opening of the square is a landmark moment ahead of the rest of the incredible developments coming into town – this is just the beginning of a major programme which will invigorate and reignite the town centre – offering people many more reasons to be here and supporting the hundreds of independent traders.”
The park was officially opened by Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft with representatives from the Towns Fund Board in attendance, and an application has also been made to Government to rename the park in memory of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Holly Mumby-Croft, member of Scunthorpe Town Fund Board, said: “It is a pleasure to open the fantastic new public space and I am certain it will be enjoyed by families for many years to come. It has been a bit of journey but its amazing to be able to appreciate it in all its glory – I know a great deal of work has gone into getting hold of the materials and the people to get this over the line.”
Esh Construction was appointed to deliver the scheme via the YORhub framework and worked in partnership with AHR, Alan Wood & Partners, Ramboll, YPP Groundworks & Civils Limited, The Fountain Company, Bouygues E&S Infrastructure, Gardham Wold Landscaping and Copeland Fencing to deliver the project.
As part of the scheme, Esh donated £1,500 to CreatorSpace which is an initiative that delivers creative activities relating to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art & maths) within Scunthorpe Central Library and other venues.
