We were thrilled to host student, Robert, on our Esh Civils site in Sunderland and provide him with first-hand knowledge and experience of a Civil Engineering role. Work experience within the construction industry provides a great opportunity to see beyond the stereotypes and hoardings and explore the wide range of opportunities we have to offer at Esh Group.
Pursuing a career in Civil Engineering and studying A-Level Maths, Physics and Chemistry, a site-based placement was the perfect base for Robert to start building practical experience ahead of University applications.
Jumping straight into the role, Robert accompanied the site team to meetings, learning about the project and gaining an understanding of what goes on behind the scenes. The team showed him the processes involved in day-to-day tasks, from the planning stage, risk assessments and documentation. Putting the theory into practice, he used the CAT Scanner to check for cabling in the area, marked out the area and used the Total machine to measure distances and points.
Placements such as this, not only benefit the candidate but also help us to identify talent and enthusiasm, in turn, helping us to develop our workforce of the future. We look forward to welcoming Robert back to one of our North East civils sites over the summer break to further develop his skills.
My initial thoughts were that sites were busy with lots of people and machinery interaction. I have gained insight into the procedures that must be followed and the importance of quality when delivering these types of project.
I can definitely see myself going into the construction industry in the future and I would recommend work placements with Esh, as they allow exposure to a working construction site.”
