Esh’s civil engineering division has successfully completed a vital flood alleviation scheme in the centre of the popular seaside town, Whitby, with works finalising on site early August.
The area has a long history of tidal flooding dating back to 1800’s, with Church Street suffering more recently from flooding in December 2013 causing major disruption to the properties and the highway. The scheme was commissioned by Scarborough Borough Council in partnership with the Environment Agency to improve the standard of flood protection for the 54 residential and eight commercial properties at risk.
Since construction work commenced in June 2019, works have included the construction of a 300m concrete floodwall along Church Street, parallel to the River Esk, as well as sections of contiguous pile cut off wall and property level protection works at The Fleece public house. Public realm works were also undertaken, which included the demolition and construction of replacement summer houses and the repaving of the gardens within the Merchant Seaman’s Hospital Gardens.

The Church Street development is the first to complete out of four schemes currently underway for Esh Civils within the Coastal & Flood Prevention sector – with works nearing completion on the £2.2m Chester-le-Street Flood Prevention Scheme in County Durham and the £7.4m Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Prevention Scheme in East Riding of Yorkshire.
