A disused and derelict piece of land in Redcar and Cleveland is set to be transformed in a £3.7 million contract secured by Esh Construction.
Building on behalf of Thirteen, 28 new bungalows for affordable rent will be constructed around the Redcar Road area in South Bank. The development is part of a larger housing led regeneration programme ongoing throughout the area and is required to meet the needs of an ageing population.
Designed by HMH Architects, the properties will replace terraces which were demolished more than 10 years ago and will complement the nearby South Bank Eco Village.

In addition to Homes England funding, the development has been awarded just over £500k by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority from the Government’s Brownfield Housing Fund, which allows local authorities to target investment towards brownfield sites.

Cllr Steve Kay, Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Welfare at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “The development of 28 new bungalows for affordable rent on this derelict site in South Bank is great news for our residents and will help with the increasing housing needs of our ageing population.
“The bungalows will complement the nearby Eco Village and will help improve the range of housing needs in the area.”
Service diversion works are currently underway. Construction of the new bungalows is set to commence in July, with the first new properties available to rent from Spring 2022.
The South Bank development bolsters Esh’s portfolio of projects underway within Tees Valley, notably Bohouse North and Rivers House on behalf of Thirteen. Located in the Middlehaven regeneration area of Middlesbrough, Bohouse North is a striking development of 40 new apartments for affordable rent, while Rivers House is the refurbishment of a former Thirteen housing office into 18 supported housing apartments.
